Which class should you pick? Kingdom, Northmen, Sultanate or Wardens
A plain guide to the four free Ironbarrow classes: their bonuses, their troops and who each one suits, plus the two supporter classes, Dragonborn and Undead.
Your class is the biggest early choice in Ironbarrow. It sets your troops, your bonuses and how your cities look on the map and inside the walls. Each class brings ten units of its own, from a cheap front line to siege engines.
The good news: the four free classes are within about 3% of each other in overall strength, so there is no wrong pick. You can also switch once a day, but switching disbands your current troops, so choose one you like.
Kingdom: balanced and forgiving
Bonuses: attack +3%, defense +12%, all production +5%.
A classic medieval realm with strong walls, solid troops of every kind and a steady economy. The Kingdom trains the Cataphract, the heaviest cavalry in the game. There is no single extreme strength, which is exactly why it is the best choice for a new player.
Northmen: raid and plunder
Bonuses: attack +17%, loot +30%, march speed +10%, defense −8%.
Fierce raiders from the cold north. Their troops hit hard and carry home huge loot, and the Berserker is the hardest-hitting infantry. The price is defense, so keep soldiers at home. Choose them if you want to clear barbarian camps and raid other players.
Sand Sultanate: gold and fast cavalry
Bonuses: gold +28%, training speed +12%, loot +10%, food +10%.
Rich desert merchants with the fastest cavalry. Gold flows in and armies are raised quickly. The Sultanate suits players who like a strong economy and who trade a lot on the player market.
Forest Wardens: defense and archers
Bonuses: defense +17%, wood +25%, food +10%, attack −5%.
Guardians of the old forest, with the best archers and defenders and rich woodland harvests. Their attack is a little weaker. They suit patient players who like to hold their ground.
The supporter classes
Dragonborn (flying armies) and the Undead Legion (an army that never eats) are optional supporter classes that need Premium. They are only slightly stronger than the free classes, by design. You never need them to enjoy or win the game.
Quick comparison
| Class | Best at | Weak at |
|---|---|---|
| Kingdom | Balance, walls, steady growth | Nothing in particular |
| Northmen | Attack, loot, speed | Defense |
| Sand Sultanate | Gold, training, fast cavalry | No single extreme strength |
| Forest Wardens | Defense, archers, wood | Attack |
