Barrowlands beginner’s guide: your first hour and first day

A friendly Barrowlands starter guide: which skills to train first, how to use plans and food, when to fight, and how to leave your hero working overnight.

· 2 min read

New to Barrowlands? This guide shows a calm first hour and a good first day. Nothing here is a rule: there is no wrong way to play, only slower and faster ways.

Start with a gathering skill

Open the Skills page and pick Woodcutting or Mining. Press Start on the first thing in the list. Your hero starts working, and the bar fills by itself. Logs and ore go into your bag, and experience goes into the skill.

Spend what you gather

Gathering is only half the game. The other half is turning it into something useful:

  • Smithing turns ore into bars and bars into swords, shields and armour.
  • Fishing and Cooking make food, which heals you in fights.
  • Firemaking burns logs for easy experience.
  • Fletching carves logs into shafts, bows and staves.

Our favourite early loop: Mining, then Smithing, then equip what you make on the Gear page.

Use the Plan

The Plan page lines up tasks one after the other: 3 steps for everyone, 6 with Premium. A step can run for a set time, or until you have made a set number (for example, 25 swords). If you run out of materials or food, the plan moves on by itself. Fill it before bed.

Then try fighting

Once you have a sword, some armour and cooked food, open Combat and pick a weak monster. Fights train Attack, Strength, Defence and Hitpoints, and they drop coins and loot. Bring food, and move up to tougher monsters when fights feel easy. Bows (Ranged) and spells (Magic) work too, and they need arrows or runes.

Seeds and Farming

Seeds are scarce on purpose. Planting uses 2 seeds, and a harvest gives 1 back. Forage the first ones, then find more by pickpocketing, fighting and shopping on the market.

While you are away

You earn for up to 12 hours while the page is closed (no limit with Premium). Choose a long task or a full plan before you go.
