Runecrafting and Magic guide: from rune essence to spells
How runes and spells work in Barrowlands: mine rune essence, craft runes, level Magic, cast spells in fights and why Runecrafting is worth your time.
Magic in Barrowlands runs on runes, and you make the runes yourself. This guide follows the chain from the mine to your spellbook.
Step 1: mine rune essence
Open Mining and choose Mine rune essence. A swing takes 3.6 seconds and gives a random amount: 3 to 9 at Mining level 1, growing to 21 to 30 at level 99. The Mining page shows the amount for your level, so higher Mining means more essence from every swing.
Step 2: craft runes
In Runecrafting, 30 essence become 10 runes. Each kind of rune unlocks at its own Runecrafting level, so you start with the basic ones (such as air) and work up to the powerful ones (such as death and blood). Runecrafting gives good experience for every go because it uses up ingredients.
Step 3: cast spells
Magic is a combat skill. Open Combat, pick a spell from the spellbook and fight. Each spell shows its biggest hit and the runes it uses (red means you are out). Every round uses the runes shown, so stock up before a long fight. A staff in your weapon slot makes your spells stronger. Fights also train Magic.
A good loop
- Mine essence for an hour (or put it in your Plan).
- Craft runes of the kind you need.
- Fight with spells and watch the rune count.
- Repeat, and use the Plan for the boring parts.
Runes in other places
Enchanting also uses runes: scrolls that speed up augmenting your gear are made from pairs of runes. And on the market, runes sell steadily because every mage needs them. See the market guide.
Tips
- Quests such as Essence run and First runes give early rewards for exactly this chain.
- Keep a few runes spare for your first Depths runs: see the Barrow Depths guide.
